What You Wanted To Be As A Child

Do you remember what you wanted to be when you were a child?

Maybe we should all take ourselves back there when we re-evaluate what we are doing with our lives and what we should be doing…what we really want to be doing to feel fulfilled and happy. I purport that the happiest people are doing something they would have liked to do way back when they were ten years old.

An interesting game you can play is what I call "My dream was…and my reality is". You should try to chart a path from your reality to your dream to feel fulfilled. Many of us do not seriously try to make the connection. Winners do.

A group of ten adults was gathered together to play another game which was similar. They each wrote down on a separate piece of paper the first occupation they could remember wanting to have when they were children.

They each folded the pieces of paper and placed them in a hat. The facilitator drew each occupation from the hat and each member of the group had to guess which person wrote down which occupation.

There was only one person for whom everyone guessed correctly. That person was me. Everyone else in the group that had failed to pursue their early dreams for a myriad of reasons, was suffering from depression. But I was happy as could be! I had done everything I possibly could to become the person I originally wanted to be…and it was obvious to everyone!

Many of the others had felt forced into living the life they were living. I wrote "felt" forced because most of them were not really forced. Even if they had kids young that does not mean they were forced…often that was a decision they made that does not have to put their dreams out of reach...even those who were forced into difficult situations find their way to the top with the right attitude and perseverance.

Some people find a way to pursue their dreams after making mistakes or somehow getting off-course, and others give up on their dreams and hope the next generation will pursue their dreams (which they may not have the slightest interest in pursuing after following a bad example of parents that did not pursue their dreams).

As the poetic philosopher Komplex says, "They act like they were forced to, when in fact they chose to, because life is full of options as long as your lungs are full of O2" Never think you have no options! Just look harder when you feel that way and eventually you are sure to find some good ones!!
