When
Planning, Did You Forget About You?
Most
of us often write down plans. For example, we regularly make a grocery list.
Why? If not, we might forget something important and waste our time, and
have to go back or go without it when we do not get everything we want. Those
of us who have businesses and write a business plan appreciate how much it
helps us improve our businesses' operations. You would be hard-pressed to
get a business loan without a written plan.
So why do most of us not have written plans for our lives? Many of us
determined to stop doing something or start doing something at the turn of
the year which was also the turn of a new decade. Did you write a plan down
for the rest of your life? How about the decade we recently entered? How
about the next 5 years or this year? You probably have a great one in your
head and are trying your best to walk it out.
Since I love to write and perform poetry I will give you an example from
this art form. Free-styling is the art of making up lyrics to a poem or song
from the top of your head. Sometimes artists do it to show how fast they can
come up with good lyrics. However, have you ever bought an album where the
artist free-styled every song on the album, without ever writing any lyrics
down? If so, was it as good as the albums that same artist made with written
lyrics?
So why do most of us free-style life? Walk through our lives for years
with no written plan, often wondering why we are not getting to do the
things that we want? Wondering why we are missing things on a shopping
list at the grocery store of life and on a list we never wrote down? Do we
not write a grocery list each time and go back to the store and pick and even
just accept doing without things we want until we
go shopping again? Or just accept never getting them at all and move on? Are
things we want to do in life less important than what we get at the store
when grocery shopping?
Are we over-confident because our 'free-styling' has worked so well for us
that we do not think we need to write down a plan for our life, or decade or
year? Do we think we are above benefiting from writing down a plan and
working on mastering it as time goes by? Or do we lack confidence to take on
such an important and challenging task? Either way, our friends, colleagues
at work, family members, or maybe most importantly - our children - are
watching and listening to our record. Are we going to keep free-styling
life? Will we agree we should write down a plan and never get around to it?
As for me, my plan is written and actually published on this website. It was
God-given and God made my dreams come true after a decade of following,
sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing, but asking God's forgiveness and
favour, and picking myself up after falling, and eventually prevailing.
I may not know you, but I do know that you are incredibly talented; possibly
beyond your wildest dreams. You have several hit songs in your head that we
would love to hear! It is up to you whether you choose to freestyle them for
us, or if you actually write down a plan your life. Why not D.I.N.? (Do It
Now) or at least start it now?
